Jimmy's Dad

Jimmy's mother dies when he is four years old.

His father doesn't have a lot of money, but what he lacks in money he makes up for in contagious hopes, dreams, and plans and, in his job as a salesman, cares for Jimmy as a father should and they are constant companions.

From the time he is born Jimmy watches his father make sale attempt after sale attempt. His hopes, dreams, and plans, contagious to some, don't seem to affect everyone. Jimmy watches his father fail time and time again.

Twelve years of failure, in fact. And once, he sees his father's idea stolen and attempted in an act of treachery. The stolen plan fails, causing some to accept it as proof that the idea is impractical.

Even so, his father moves on and makes his sales presentation again. No luck.

Out of money and dejected, his father's thought now is to make one more sales attempt and then give up the idea. Meanwhile, they need help. They find it at a small congregation of St. Mary's church in a small seaside town. Brother John, the minister, listens to Jimmy's dad tell his story and persuades him to make another attempt to sell the idea to one of the people who has already rejected the plan, but who is a long-time friend of Brother John's. No guarantees, but he can arrange the meeting.

Jimmy's eyes are on his father.

There are little eyes up on you
And they're watching night and day;
There are little ears that quickly
Take in every word you say;
There are little hands all eager
To do anything you do;
And a little boy who's dreaming
Of the day he'll be like you.
You're the little fellow's idol,
You're the wisest of the wise.
In his little mind about you
No suspicions ever rise.
He believes in you devoutly,
Holds all that you say and do;
He will say and do in your way
When he's a grown-up like you.
There's a wide-eyed little fellow
Who believes you're always right
And his ears are always open
And he watches day and night.
You are setting an example
Every day in all you do,
For the little boy who's waiting
To grow up to be like you.

Jimmy's dad makes the sales presentation to Brother John's long-time friend.

And, after many, many years of failure, Jimmy's dad's idea is accepted.

Good thing for you and me.

You see, Brother John, Friar Juan Perez, is the confessor to Isabella of Castile, queen of Spain and married to the monarch King Ferdinand of Aragon. And Jimmy "Diego" Columbus is watching closely a father whose first name is Christopher--Christopher Columbus, dreamer, planner, world navigator and salesman.

What are your hopes, dreams, and plans?

Is someone looking up to you?

Get started now.
